UN Representative Calls for International Action Against Israeli Moves in Occupied Palestinian Territory
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has urged the United Nations to take action against recent Israeli measures aimed at deepening control over the occupied Palestinian territory. Ambassador Riyad Mansour, representing Palestine at the UN, made the call on Tuesday, flanked by representatives from Arab and Muslim-majority nations.
According to Mansour, the international community must stop Israel’s efforts to cement its control over the West Bank, which he described as “the annexation of the land of the Palestinian people.” The Israeli security cabinet approved measures on Sunday that would allow Israelis to seize Palestinian land and directly purchase property in the occupied territory, expanding military control.
The International Court of Justice ruled in 2024 that Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are in violation of international law. Repeated UN resolutions have declared the Israeli occupation illegal. Countries worldwide have condemned Israel’s measures, but no meaningful consequences or sanctions have been imposed on the country for its actions against Palestinians.
Turkiye’s ambassador to the UN, Ahmet Yildiz, read out a statement from the OIC condemning the Israeli moves as “illegal” and stating that they only serve to fuel violence in the region. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has expressed support for the Palestinian push against the Israeli occupation, highlighting growing international backing for the cause.
The move comes ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the United States, which begins on Wednesday.
