Labour MP Catherine West Calls for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Set Election Timetable
A meeting of urgency has taken place at 10 Downing Street as Labour MP Catherine West urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to set a timetable for the election of a new leader in September. The call comes amid growing pressure on Starmer following the party’s recent local election defeat, which saw over 1,400 councillors lost in England.
In a statement released on Monday, Starmer acknowledged Labour’s mistakes and took responsibility for the “very tough” results. He promised to address the challenges facing the country and make the case for a stronger, fairer Britain. The Prime Minister also highlighted reductions in National Health Service waiting lists, child poverty, and immigration, stating that the fundamentals of the party are sound.
Labour MP Catherine West has called on cabinet ministers to “move quickly” to replace Starmer, citing the need for an orderly transition. She stated that she would be emailing her colleagues to gather support for a potential leadership challenge. Over 30 Labour MPs have expressed similar sentiments, with some calling for Starmer’s resignation or setting out a clear timetable for his departure.
The Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey has also weighed in on the situation, stating that voters have sent a clear message that Britain needs a new direction. Meanwhile, Labour MP Paulette Hamilton has suggested that the party may as well hand over leadership to a new candidate if they do not change their approach soon.
Starmer’s speech was met with mixed reactions from his colleagues, with some praising his efforts and others expressing disappointment. The Prime Minister has promised to introduce legislation on key issues such as British Steel ownership and rebuilding the UK’s relationship with Europe.
