Labour Party Communications Chief Tim Allan Steps Down Amid Leadership Fallout
In a move announced on Monday, Tim Allan has resigned as leader of the Labour Party, effective immediately. This decision comes one day after Morgan McSweeney, Starmer’s chief of staff, also tendered his resignation.
According to Allan, he has chosen to step down in order to allow for the establishment of a new team at No. 10 Downing Street. The statement provided by Allan does not elaborate on the reasons behind his decision.
The departures of McSweeney and Allan have added pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has faced criticism over his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. In September, Starmer sacked Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States due to his known connections to Epstein, a convicted US sex offender. Mandelson had previously been under investigation following the release of files related to Epstein’s investigations by the US Department of Justice.
Mandelson has since quit the Labour Party and House of Lords, the upper chamber of the UK Parliament. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is currently reviewing an exit payment made to him after his dismissal from the role.
In a statement on Monday, Starmer emphasized the importance of moving forward and maintaining confidence in politics as a force for good.
