Kosovo Parliament Approves Government Led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti

Kosovo’s Parliament Approves New Government Led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti

A 66-49 vote was recorded in Kosovo’s parliament on Wednesday, as lawmakers backed the new government led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti. The approval came hours after the assembly convened for the first time since a snap election held in December.

Kurti’s Vetevendosje party won the election with more than 51 percent of the vote, securing 57 seats. The result was confirmed after an initial recount and a criminal investigation into alleged inaccuracies in the tally. Kurti has now become the country’s leader.

In his legislative agenda, Kurti cited the economy and increased investment in defence as key areas for focus. He plans to invest one billion euros ($1.18bn) for military purposes, including the production of combat drones. The prime minister also emphasized the need for “normalisation of relations” with Serbia, citing tensions between the two countries.

Kurti’s government will face several urgent tasks, including approving key international loans and reforming health and education systems. The new government has also set out plans to approve the 2026 budget. Kurti’s party secured a majority in the parliament, paving the way for his cabinet to take office.
