Health Secretary Wes Streeting Receives Letter from Jeremy Corbyn Over Private Messages
British legislator Jeremy Corbyn has written a letter to Health Secretary Wes Streeting, requesting cooperation on exposing the UK’s involvement in alleged genocide in Gaza. The letter was sent after private messages between Streeting and the UK’s former ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson, were released by Sky News.
The messages revealed that Streeting had previously acknowledged Israel’s commitment of war crimes in Palestine. In one message, dated July 2025, Streeting wrote: “Morally and politically, I think we need to join France… Morally, because Israel is committing war crimes before our eyes.” This statement contradicted the public stance of the UK government, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Corbyn’s letter stated that Streeting’s admission aimed to thwart policy consequences of recognising Israel’s well-documented war crimes. The Labour government recognised Palestine last year and imposed sanctions on far-right Israeli government ministers. However, critics argue that the UK has not done enough to hold Israel accountable for its violations.
Streeting had voluntarily released the messages as part of an effort to demonstrate transparency over his ties to Mandelson. In a statement, Kristyan Benedict, crisis response manager at Amnesty International UK, said: “What is damning is that the Prime Minister and his government have continued business as usual despite overwhelming evidence from the UN and human rights organisations of war crimes and genocide.”
Corbyn’s letter also asked Streeting why he did not resign from the government and whether he would be willing to cooperate with the International Criminal Court in any investigation over London’s complicity in alleged war crimes in Gaza.
