US to Maintain Travel Restrictions for Iranian Soccer Team
The United States will continue to enforce its travel restrictions on the Iranian soccer team, despite their complaints to FIFA and concerns about their visa arrangements. According to Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House Task Force for the tournament, the original plan remains in place.
Iran’s team is required to depart from venues within 24 hours of their fixtures and return directly to their training base in Tijuana, Mexico, after each game. This protocol has been in effect since the pre-tournament change in training bases from Tucson to Tijuana, which was intended to reduce travel time for the team.
The Iranian delegation left the US hours after their first World Cup match against New Zealand, prompting criticism of the US handling of their visas. However, the US Department of State has confirmed that Mehdi Torabi’s entry visa has been renewed, allowing him to participate in future matches.
Giuliani stated that the situation is fluid and will be reassessed for each match. The team’s travel arrangements will be discussed after each game, with a focus on ensuring the safety and security of all participants.
The US goal is to balance the needs of American citizens and international visitors attending the World Cup. Giuliani emphasized that no credible threats have been identified, but officials remain vigilant. The tournament has proceeded without incident so far, and Giuliani expressed satisfaction with the opening 10 days of the event.
