Costa Rica’s Presidential Election Results: Laura Fernandez Declares Victory
Preliminary results from the country’s electoral tribunal have confirmed that Laura Fernandez, a candidate from the Sovereign People’s Party, has secured a commanding lead in the presidential election. Fernandez declared victory on Monday morning, following the announcement of votes tallied from 81 percent of polling stations.
According to the tribunal, Fernandez received 48.9 percent of the vote, while her closest challenger, economist Alvaro Ramos of the National Liberation Party, garnered 33 percent. The results fell short of the 40 percent threshold required for an outright victory, necessitating a run-off election on April 5.
Fernandez’s victory speech emphasized her commitment to upholding the rule of law and modifying or repealing outdated laws that hinder development. Ramos conceded defeat on Sunday night, pledging to lead a constructive opposition that would allow for dissent and criticism.
The campaign centered around security concerns, with homicides reaching an all-time high in 2023. Fernandez’s tough stance on security has raised concerns among the opposition about potential erosion of democratic values.
Fernandez is the handpicked successor of incumbent President Rodrigo Chaves and campaigned on continuing his security policies. The election also saw a vote for the 57-seat National Assembly, with Chaves’ party expected to make gains but fall short of achieving a supermajority.
A total of 3.7 million Costa Ricans were eligible to vote in Sunday’s elections.
