Costa Rica’s Presidential Election Results: Laura Fernandez Declared Winner
Preliminary results from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal have shown Laura Fernandez, a candidate from the Sovereign People’s Party, leading with 48.9 percent of the vote. Fernandez has declared victory in Costa Rica’s presidential election, following her closest challenger, economist Alvaro Ramos of the National Liberation Party, conceding defeat.
Fernandez promised “deep and irreversible change” during her victory speech, stating that Costa Rica is entering a new political era. She also pledged to lead a nation that is “respectful and firm on the rule of law.” Fernandez’s campaign focused on security issues, including building a maximum-security mega-prison and stricter criminal sentencing.
Ramos conceded on Sunday night, pledging to lead a constructive opposition. He stated that in democracy, dissent and criticism are allowed. The election results show Fernandez needing at least 40 percent to win outright and avoid a run-off on April 5.
Costa Ricans also voted for the National Assembly, with Fernandez’s party projected to win a majority of 30 seats. The opposition has expressed concerns about Fernandez’s tough line on security, fearing it may erode the democratic nature of the country. However, Fernandez stated that her government would remain democratic and never turn authoritarian.
The election was held in Costa Rica, which is currently in its second republic after the 1948 civil war. The nation’s second republic began after a period of instability, and Fernandez has promised to build the third republic. A total of 3.7 million eligible voters participated in the elections.
