International Criminal Court Issues Arrest Warrants Against Israeli Leaders
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant in November 2024. However, the process of gathering evidence for these warrants began years ago.
Palestinian lawyers and human rights organizations have been documenting crimes committed by Israel, including torture, sexual violence, arbitrary detention, attacks on hospitals, and the killing of children. These organizations have faced harassment, violence, and sanctions while working to build a case against Israeli leaders.
One such organization, Al-Haq, has gathered testimony from victims and witnesses, preserved evidence, and submitted reports and legal submissions to courts, including the ICC. The organization’s work has been targeted by Israel, which designated it as a “terrorist” organization in 2021. Despite this designation, Al-Haq continues to operate.
Other Palestinian rights groups, such as Defense for Children International-Palestine and the Union of Palestinian Women’s Committees, have also faced similar challenges while documenting abuses. In August 2022, Israeli forces raided and sealed their offices in Ramallah, prompting condemnation from UN experts and major rights groups.
The ICC arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant mark a significant development in the case against Israeli leaders. However, it is unclear whether these warrants will lead to any concrete action. The international community has been slow to respond to allegations of crimes committed by Israel, and much work remains to be done to hold those responsible accountable.
Palestinian human rights organizations have long documented abuses committed by Israel, often at great personal risk. Despite facing harassment, violence, and sanctions, these organizations continue to push for justice and accountability. The ICC arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant may mark a turning point in this effort, but much work remains to be done to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
