US-Iran Talks Postponed Due to Ongoing Israeli Attacks in Lebanon
A planned meeting between US and Iranian officials in Switzerland has been postponed due to ongoing military operations by Israel in southern Lebanon. The Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday that the talks, scheduled for Burgenstock Resort, would not proceed as initially planned.
According to reports, Iran had delayed sending its delegation to discuss technical issues related to a ceasefire agreement signed by both countries earlier this week. The agreement was digitally signed and aimed to establish a framework for negotiations during a 60-day period.
Israeli attacks in Lebanon have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 16 people, with Hezbollah reporting intense fighting. Iran has insisted that Israel must withdraw from southern Lebanon, which it occupies.
The US had pushed to quickly begin high-stakes talks with Iran, but the postponement has put a snag in the process. Vice President JD Vance was set to meet with his Iranian counterparts at the resort, but the trip was cancelled on Thursday evening due to logistical issues.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also cancelled his planned visit to Switzerland, citing the ongoing situation. The Swiss Foreign Ministry stated that it remains ready to facilitate talks and that preparatory work continues at Burgenstock Resort.
