Libyas Largest Oil Refinery Halts Operations Amid Ongoing Fighting

Libya’s Zawiya Refinery Shut Down Amid Ongoing Fighting

A precautionary measure has been taken at Libya’s largest operational oil refinery in Zawiya, with operations halted and employees evacuated from the site. The National Oil Corporation (NOC) and Zawiya Refining Company have announced a halt to activities following reports of armed clashes involving heavy weapons near the complex.

According to NOC, alarm sirens were activated due to the clashes, which resulted in several projectiles landing within the refinery. No significant damage was reported, but authorities have confirmed that the situation has escalated and poses a risk to nearby residential areas.

A large-scale operation has been launched by authorities in Zawiya against criminal groups involved in various serious acts, including murder, kidnapping, and human trafficking. The operation targets “criminal hideouts and wanted individuals” in the area.

The refinery, which is approximately 40km west of Tripoli, has a capacity of 120,000 barrels per day and is connected to the Sharara oilfield. The Zawiya Refining Company has called on all parties involved to cease fire immediately and for authorities to intervene to protect lives and key facilities.

The situation in Libya remains complex, with ongoing violence between the Government of National Unity and the eastern-based government led by Khalifa Haftar. The cause of the recent fighting is unclear, but local media reports suggest it began following a security operation against armed groups.
