Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva met with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday for talks focused on trade, security, and critical minerals. The meeting was seen as an opportunity for both leaders to reset their relationship, which had been strained in recent years.
Trump and Lula, who are known for their populist ideologies, held a three-hour discussion that covered various topics, including tariffs. Trump stated that the meeting went “very well” and that additional meetings would be scheduled over the coming months. Lula expressed satisfaction with the talks, describing them as an important step in consolidating the Brazil-United States relationship.
The two leaders have distinct views on economic policy and international alliances, but they share a common goal of building their respective followings among loyal supporters. Brazilian officials had hoped for a positive outcome from the meeting, given tensions that arose last year over Trump’s tariff policy and his criticism of the trial and conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The meeting took place during a challenging time for Lula, who recently faced setbacks in Congress, including the override of his veto on a law related to Bolsonaro’s prison sentence. The Brazilian president is set to seek re-election in October, with polls currently showing him neck and neck with Bolsonaro’s senator son, Flavio.
In recent weeks, Brazil has been subject to scrutiny over its timber exports, which the US Trade Representative alleges come from illegal sources. Tensions also remain between the two countries on digital trade and tariffs on certain goods, including ethanol.
