Mabrey Ties WNBA Scoring Record with 53 Points in Win Over Sparks

Toronto’s Mabrey Ties WNBA Scoring Record in 125-97 Win Over Los Angeles Sparks

Marina Mabrey of the Toronto Tempo scored a career-high 53 points in the team’s 125-97 win over the visiting Los Angeles Sparks. The performance tied A’ja Wilson and Liz Cambage for the league’s single-game scoring record.

Mabrey achieved this milestone behind a strong 9-of-18 three-point shooting effort. She had previously set a then-career-high 37 points in a June 19 game against Connecticut, where she also hit nine three-pointers. Mabrey surpassed that mark three quarters into Thursday’s contest with 39 points before adding another 14 to match the scoring record.

The Toronto Tempo dominated from the start, building a 19-6 lead within four minutes of play behind a trio of triples from Mabrey, Maria Conde, and Julie Allemand. The team continued to pull away, shooting 20-of-42 from beyond the arc as a whole. Conde finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Allemand dished out a career-high 14 assists.

The Los Angeles Sparks struggled to find offense, going 11-of-38 from outside the arc. The team’s top scorers, Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby, each finished with 21 points, but were unable to overcome the Tempo’s strong performance. Erica Wheeler and Ariel Atkins were both in foul trouble, while Cameron Brink was out due to an ankle injury.

The Sparks came into Thursday’s contest without season-long leading scorer Kelsey Plum, who suffered a leg injury in Sunday’s win over New York. The Tempo took advantage of this, building a large lead early on and never looking back.
