Mali faces ongoing armed attacks with significant security implications

Mali Experiences Coordinated Attacks by Armed Groups

A series of coordinated attacks carried out by unidentified armed groups in Mali have escalated the country’s ongoing security crisis. The attacks began on Saturday, targeting military sites across the country, including the capital city of Bamako.

According to a statement released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces, the attacks targeted certain locations and barracks in the capital and interior regions. Fighting is ongoing, with reports of loud explosions and sustained gunfire heard near Mali’s main military base in Kati, just north of Bamako.

The attacks have also been linked to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-linked group that has claimed responsibility for the assaults. Additionally, Tuareg rebels have also participated in the latest attacks.

Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara was reportedly killed during the coordinated attacks on Saturday. His residence in Kati was also targeted.

The current military ruler, Assimi Goita, has not yet made a public statement regarding the situation. The African Union, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and United States Bureau of African Affairs have condemned the attacks.

Reports indicate that the scale and coordination of the attack appear to be unprecedented, with an “unprecedented level of panic” among military ranks. Security forces have reported killing “several hundred” assailants and repelling the assault, which hit multiple sites in or near Bamako.

A large-scale sweep operation is currently underway in Bamako, Kati, and other regions of the country. The situation remains under control, according to the military.
