Manchester City to Face Newcastle United in Premier League Match
On Saturday, February 21 at 8pm (20:00 GMT), Manchester City will host Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium in a crucial English Premier League match. A win for City would cut Arsenal’s lead to two points, putting pressure on the league leaders ahead of their north London derby on Sunday.
Manchester City has recently secured victories over Liverpool and Fulham, positioning themselves to capitalize on Arsenal’s slump. The Gunners have experienced successive draws against Brentford and Wolves, resulting in just two wins in their last seven league matches. Newcastle United, meanwhile, is seeking to revive its faltering Premier League campaign, currently sitting 10th in the standings.
Newcastle has lost its last 12 games at City, making Saturday’s match a crucial opportunity for the Magpies to end that run. The team comes into the game on a high after beating Spurs 2-1 and thrashing Qarabag 6-1 in the Champions League. Manchester City is now unbeaten in seven games across all competitions, boasting the joint-best home record in the league.
Arsenal, currently five points clear of second-placed City, faces pointed questions about its ability to handle the mounting tension. Tijjani Reijnders has warned that City is primed to pounce after allowing them back into the title race. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe stated that his team tries to learn from City every time they play against them, aiming to bridge the gap between the two teams.
The two clubs have a long history, having first met in 1893 when Newcastle beat Manchester City (then known as Ardwick) 3-2 in Division Two. The teams have faced each other 197 times across all competitions, with City winning 81 of those games and Newcastle winning 74.
