US Midterm Elections Approach: Key Facts and Process
The United States will hold midterm elections on November 3, where nearly 244 million eligible voters will cast ballots for various positions. These elections are not for a new president but rather to vote for 35 US Senate seats and all 435 House seats. Additionally, voters will elect 39 state governors and state legislators.
The Senate has 100 seats, with each of the 50 states represented by two senators regardless of population size. One-third of the Senate’s seats are up for grabs in these elections, as senators serve six-year terms and elections are staggered. The House of Representatives allocates seats to each state according to population, resulting in a total of 435 members serving two-year terms.
The Republicans narrowly retained control of the House with 220 seats to the Democrats’ 215 in 2024. This slim majority is significant, as it highlights the importance of redistricting. Before November’s elections, each party must decide which candidates to field through internal contests known as primaries. These primaries begin as early as March and run through the summer, state by state.
The process of drawing congressional district maps, also known as redistricting, determines which voters are grouped together and will vote for a single person. This process is triggered every 10 years after the US census, resulting in a nationwide redrawing of congressional districts. The number of seats in the House has remained at 435 since 1912.
In recent years, several states have redrawn their congressional maps again, with some successfully and others blocked by courts due to accusations of gerrymandering. Gerrymandering refers to the practice of drawing electoral district boundaries to favor one political party over another. The US is closely associated with this tactic, which exists in many countries with district-based voting systems.
On November 3, voters will cast ballots for various positions, including Senate seats, House seats, governors, and state legislators. The outcome of these elections will determine the balance of power in Congress and the shape of electoral district maps.
