Moroccos Diop makes international debut amidst ongoing Senegal AFCON dispute

Morocco National Team Welcomes Issa Diop on International Debut

Issa Diop, a 29-year-old defender from Fulham, made his international debut for Morocco just hours after receiving clearance and turning down Senegal’s advances. The move comes amid controversy surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations title, with Morocco being declared the winner.

Diop, who was born in France to a Senegalese father and Moroccan mother, had previously expressed interest in playing for France but ultimately decided to pursue an opportunity with Morocco. He was approved by FIFA to switch nationality and was immediately drafted into the starting lineup for Friday’s 1-1 draw against Ecuador in Madrid.

Diop spoke about his decision, stating that he was happy to play for a team with good players and felt he had made a good choice. He credited Moroccan coach Mohamed Ouahbi and Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa for their vision and welcoming nature.

The move marks the first time Morocco has faced competition from another African country over player loyalty. Senegal, who were stripped of the Africa Cup of Nations title, have also been involved in a dispute with FIFA over the decision. The North Africans have a history of attracting players with ties to the country, but this is the first instance where they have won a title and faced opposition from another African nation.

The situation has led to posturing between Senegal and Morocco, with Senegal holding a news conference on Friday ahead of their friendly against Peru. The team plans to display the Cup of Nations trophy to supporters before the match at the Stade de France.
