Mozambique Secures Historic First Win in Africa Cup of Nations
In a Group F match played on Sunday, Mozambique claimed its first-ever victory in the Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-2 win over Gabon. The match took place at Agadir Stadium and saw Mozambique score twice before halftime, with Faizal Bangal heading home and Geny Catamo netting from the penalty spot.
Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back for his team before the break, but Diogo Calila restored Mozambique’s two-goal cushion. Despite Gabon’s Alex Moucketou-Moussounda pulling one back, Mozambique secured its maiden win in the tournament.
In another Group F match played on Sunday, Cameroon and Ivory Coast drew 1-1 at Marrakesh Stadium. Amad Diallo scored for Ivory Coast in the 51st minute, but Junior Tchamadeu levelled for Cameroon with a deflection in the 56th minute.
The draw sees both teams share the lead in Group F with four points apiece, followed by Mozambique on three. Gabon will need to win its final group game to have any chance of reaching the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams.
In Group E, Algeria secured a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso at Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat. Riyad Mahrez converted from the penalty spot midway through the first half, giving him his 23rd-minute goal and increasing his tally to three goals at the tournament.
Algeria now have six points after two games, with Vladimir Petkovic’s side living up to their billing as one of the pre-tournament favourites. Burkina Faso and Sudan come next on three points each, but they play each other in the final round of group games on Wednesday.
In another Group E match played on Sunday, Sudan secured a 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea at Casablanca Stadium. Saul Coco’s own goal in the 74th minute gave Sudan its first victory in the tournament since 1970.
