High-Stakes Trial Set to Begin Over AI Development Dispute
A high-profile trial is scheduled to begin on Monday with jury selection, pitting two prominent figures in the technology industry against each other. Elon Musk and Sam Altman, co-founders of OpenAI, are set to face off in a civil lawsuit that centers on the development of artificial intelligence (AI).
The trial revolves around the creation of ChatGPT, a language model developed by OpenAI, which was initially funded by Musk as a nonprofit start-up. However, the company has since evolved into a for-profit venture valued at $852 billion.
Musk is suing Altman and Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s CEO and a co-founder, alleging that they strayed from the company’s founding mission to be an altruistic steward of revolutionary technology. Musk claims that the defendants kept him in the dark about their plans, exploited his financial support, and created a “wealth machine” for themselves.
The lawsuit also seeks to have OpenAI revert to a nonprofit status, remove Altman and Brockman as officers, and have Altman removed from the board. The trial’s outcome could potentially sway the balance of power in AI development, a technology that has raised concerns about its impact on employment and human survival.
Internal documents revealed in court include a personal diary entry by Brockman, which reads: “This is the only chance we have to get out from Elon.” Musk is seeking damages for allegedly being conned by Altman and the public. OpenAI has denied Musk’s allegations as unfounded and aimed at undercutting its rapid growth.
The trial also carries risks for Musk, who was recently held liable by another jury for defrauding investors during his $44 billion takeover of Twitter in 2022. The outcome could have significant implications for both parties, particularly given Musk’s plans to go public with SpaceX this summer.
