US President Donald Trump Expresses Consideration for NATO Exit Amid Tensions Over Iran Conflict
Washington D.C. - US President Donald Trump has stated that he is considering withdrawing from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), citing growing tensions with the alliance’s member states over their response to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
In an interview published on Wednesday, Trump expressed frustration with NATO allies’ reluctance to provide support for the US-led efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that accounts for approximately 20% of global oil and gas exports. The US has requested that its allies join a naval coalition to open the strait, but several countries, including Italy, the UK, France, Greece, and Germany, have declined.
Trump’s comments were echoed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stated that if NATO is only focused on defending Europe, it may not be an effective alliance. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius explained his country’s position, stating that “this is not our war” and that they have not started the conflict.
The US has been seeking support from its allies in securing the Strait of Hormuz, but some countries have expressed concerns about their ability to contribute effectively. Trump has suggested that countries like the UK, which refused to participate in the decapitation of Iran, should instead purchase jet fuel from the US or build up their military capabilities.
Experts warn that Trump’s comments and those of his cabinet members may be contributing to a growing sense of anger among the president’s supporters, potentially weakening the bond between NATO allies. The tensions over the conflict in Iran have already led to concerns about the potential consequences for global economic stability, with shipping companies avoiding the Strait of Hormuz due to safety fears and oil prices rising by up to 60% in some regions.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Trump’s consideration of withdrawing from NATO will play out.
