NATO evaluates US troop deployment changes in Germany

US Announces Plan to Withdraw Troops from Germany Amid Tensions with European Allies

The US military has announced plans to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany over a period of six to 12 months. The decision comes amid escalating tensions between the US and its European allies regarding the war in Iran.

According to NATO spokesperson Allison Hart, the alliance is assessing the details of the US decision to reduce its troop presence in Germany. The process is expected to unfold over the next several months.

The planned withdrawal has been linked to a feud between US President Donald Trump and European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who recently stated that the US was being “humiliated” by Iran’s leadership. Trump has responded by urging Merz to focus on domestic issues rather than intervening in international conflicts.

Former US diplomat Donald Jensen notes that the US troop withdrawal reflects a shift in US military priorities and may signal a longer-term reconfiguration of Europe’s security framework. He suggests that more American troops could be deployed closer to China, which is viewed as a greater threat by Washington.

In response to the announcement, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius stated that Germany had anticipated a US withdrawal and emphasized the need for European countries to take greater responsibility for their own security. NATO’s Hart echoed this view, highlighting the importance of increased defence spending and investment in Europe’s security.

The decision follows last year’s NATO summit in The Hague, where members agreed to boost defence spending to up to 5 percent of their budgets.
