Israeli Politicians Target Turkiye Amid Heightened Tensions
Relations between Israel and Turkey have deteriorated further, with accusations and increased geopolitical tensions. Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett recently stated that Turkey poses a threat to Israel, likening it to Iran in terms of regional influence. Bennett’s comments were made during a conference last week, where he emphasized the need for Israel to address this perceived threat.
Other Israeli politicians have expressed similar sentiments, criticizing Turkey’s stance on Palestinian issues and its growing ties with regional powers such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Turkish relations with Israel have historically been more pragmatic, but recent developments suggest that both countries are seeking new alliances.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently announced plans to forge a new “hexagon” of alliances, aimed at countering what he described as an “emerging radical Sunni axis.” This alliance includes countries like Greece and Cyprus, which have had strained relations with Turkey. Analysts note that the timing of this campaign against Turkey may be linked to Israel’s push for war against Iran.
Former Israeli ambassador Alon Pinkas stated that politicians like Bennett and Netanyahu often rely on the threat of war as a means to justify their policies. This approach has been consistent throughout Israel’s history, with various countries serving as perceived threats over the years.
The current situation in Israel is marked by ongoing conflict and heightened tensions. Since October 2023, Israel has been involved in a series of military operations, including the Gaza genocide and invasion of Lebanon. The country’s actions have sparked international criticism and opposition to its annexation plans for the occupied West Bank.
Analysts point out that Bennett’s focus on Turkey as a threat is complicated by the two countries’ long-standing relationship and Turkey’s membership in NATO. However, this does not diminish the fact that Israel is seeking to establish new alliances and counter perceived threats in the region.
