Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings steps down amid Warner Bros loss

Netflix Chairman Reed Hastings to Step Down

Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix, announced his departure from the streaming service he founded 29 years ago. In a letter to investors released on Thursday, Hastings stated that he will not stand for re-election at the company’s annual meeting in June and plans to focus on philanthropy and other pursuits.

As a result of Hastings’ departure, Netflix’ stock price dropped by approximately 8 percent. The news has sparked concerns among investors, according to LightShed Partners media analyst Richard Greenfield. “Netflix is growing revenues double-digits, expanding margins in 2026, and gushing free cash flow,” said Greenfield.

In a 14-page shareholder letter, Netflix reaffirmed its mission to entertain the world by providing movies and series for various tastes, cultures, and languages. The company’s full-year outlook remained unchanged. Netflix reported a revenue increase of 16 percent in the first quarter, exceeding analyst forecasts of $12.18 billion.

The company highlighted areas of future growth, including investments in expanding its entertainment offerings, such as video podcasts and live events. It plans to use technology to improve the user experience and monetization, with advertising revenue expected to reach $3 billion in 2026, a two-fold increase from last year.

Netflix will receive a $2.8 billion termination fee after losing the Warner Bros movie studio and HBO deal to Paramount Skydance. The company did not disclose plans for how it would use this amount.
