The Supreme Court has denied former US President Donald Trump’s appeal in a sexual abuse case brought by E. Jean Carroll, ruling that he must pay her $5 million.
In 2019, Carroll sued Trump over allegations of rape made in his 1996 book “The America We Deserve.” The trial resulted in a verdict in favor of Carroll, with the jury awarding her $5 million in damages.
Trump appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, arguing that the trial was unfair and that the jury’s verdict was incorrect. However, on Tuesday, the court rejected his appeal, upholding the lower court’s ruling.
The Supreme Court’s decision means that Trump will be required to pay Carroll the full amount of $5 million in damages. The court’s ruling does not address the underlying allegations made by Carroll against Trump.
Carroll had previously spoken publicly about her alleged rape at the direction of a friend, who was also a friend of Trump’s. She claimed that Trump had assaulted her in a department store dressing room in 1993.
Trump has consistently denied Carroll’s allegations and has maintained that they are false.
