Nigeria Secures Third Place at 2025 AFCON with Penalty Shootout Win Over Egypt
In the third-place playoff match of the Africa Cup Nations, Nigeria defeated Egypt 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the teams drew 0-0 in normal time. The Super Eagles’ victory was secured by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who saved two penalties from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.
The match saw no extra time played to determine the bronze medal, as the teams were already tied at 0-0 after regular play. Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman scored the winning penalty in the shootout, securing the team’s second consecutive penalty shootout victory following a scoreless draw against Morocco in the semifinals on Wednesday.
Nigeria’s defenders successfully kept Salah quiet throughout the match, preventing him from adding to his 11 Africa Cup goals. Victor Osimhen remained on Nigeria’s substitutes’ bench, suggesting he may have been carrying an injury sustained during the semifinal defeat to Morocco.
The Super Eagles’ third-place finish marks a positive end to their tournament campaign, contrasting with last year’s final loss to Ivory Coast. Morocco and Senegal will contest the Africa Cup Nations final in Rabat on Sunday, after Senegal defeated Egypt 1-0 in their semifinal match.
