Iranian Human Rights Activist Transferred to Hospital Due to Health Decline
Narges Mohammadi, a prominent Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been transferred from prison to a hospital in Tehran due to a significant decline in her health. According to the Narges Mohammadi Foundation, Mohammadi experienced two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and suffered a severe cardiac crisis.
Mohammadi’s lawyers reported that she had fainted twice in prison in Zanjan, northwestern Iran, earlier on Friday. Her condition was deemed unmanageable by prison doctors, prompting the transfer to a hospital for specialized treatment. The foundation stated that Mohammadi’s health had been deteriorating since her arrest in December and that an alleged beating during her arrest had contributed to her worsening condition.
Mohammadi, 53, has been imprisoned since December 12 after being arrested during a visit to Mashhad. In February, she was sentenced to over seven years in prison, with six years of the sentence attributed to charges of “gathering and collusion to commit crimes.” Her family had previously reported that her health was declining due to alleged mistreatment during her arrest.
The Nobel committee condemned Mohammadi’s treatment in a statement in February, describing it as “ongoing life-threatening mistreatment.” The Iranian government has not commented on the allegations. Prior to her arrest, Mohammadi had been serving a 13-year and nine-month sentence for charges of collusion against state security and propaganda against Iran’s government, but was released on furlough due to medical concerns in late 2024.
