US Geological Survey Reports Potential for High Casualties Following Earthquakes in Venezuela
A series of powerful earthquakes struck South America on Wednesday, causing significant damage and prompting concerns about potential casualties. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred near San Felipe, approximately 284 kilometers west of Caracas, at 22:04 GMT. Shortly after, a magnitude 7.5 quake hit an area near Yumare, roughly 293 kilometers west of the capital.
The USGS has stated that high casualties and extensive damage are “probable” as a result of these earthquakes. Footage shared on social media by Wilmer Azuaje, a representative for Barinas State, shows debris falling from buildings and people seeking shelter at Simón Bolívar International Airport in Caracas. Odalis Escalona, a 54-year-old bank employee in the city, described the scene as follows: “The stairs came away, the whole wall cracked… Things fell from the ceiling. It was horrible.”
Details of the damage and potential casualties are still emerging. The USGS will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
