Egypt: Truck-Pickup Collision Claims 18 Lives

A collision between a truck and a passenger pick-up occurred on the 30 June Axis highway in Port Said province, Egypt, resulting in 18 fatalities and three injuries. The incident took place at approximately 12:30pm local time (10:30 GMT) on Thursday.

According to reports from Al-Ahram newspaper, the crash involved a pick-up truck transporting fishermen to work at fish farms in the coastal area of Port Said. Survivors are receiving treatment at a hospital, and public prosecutors have launched an investigation into the accident’s circumstances.

Images posted online show the aftermath of the collision, with debris scattered across the road and a pick-up truck crushed between two large cargo trucks. The Associated Press reports that the pick-up truck was carrying fishermen to work.

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has sent condolences to the victims’ families and ordered financial assistance for relatives of those affected. He stated in a Facebook post that he is following up on the incident through reports from the governor of Port Said province.

The collision is part of a broader trend of deadly road accidents in Egypt, which claim thousands of lives each year. Contributing factors to these incidents include speeding, poor road conditions, and lax enforcement of traffic laws.
