Two individuals have been killed in a shooting incident in central Israel, according to Israeli police. The victims include one man who died from gunshot wounds and another suspect who was shot by police during a manhunt.
The incident occurred on Sunday in the Kochav Yair area, near the occupied West Bank city of Qalqilya. Police reported that the shooter began firing at passersby at a gas station and continued shooting in nearby towns, including Tzur Yitzhak and Tzur Natan.
Israeli authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with police forces, border guard soldiers, and special units conducting searches for additional suspects. The weapon used by the attacker has been located.
The Israeli internal security agency and police have also imposed a security cordoning on several neighboring Arab villages in Tayibe, where the suspected gunman was from. Hamas has issued a statement commending the attack, describing it as a “heroic” operation, although it did not claim responsibility for the incident.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office is holding a situational assessment of the shooting attack. The Israeli ambulance service Magen David Adom reported that they responded quickly to the incident, with paramedics providing medical treatment to injured civilians and transporting them to hospitals.
