Pentagon allocates $29 billion for potential Iran military operation

Pentagon Reveals Estimated Cost of War with Iran

The Pentagon has released a new estimate of the cost of the war with Iran, stating that it has incurred $29 billion in expenses. This figure is an increase from the previously reported $25 billion, attributed to “updated repair and replacement of equipment” and “general operational costs.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth appeared before a congressional panel on Tuesday, where he stated that the US is prepared to escalate or wind down the conflict.

The administration has not provided a clear picture of damage sustained at US military installations across the Middle East or the extent to which the fighting has affected its munitions stockpile. Some lawmakers have questioned the accuracy of the estimated cost, citing potential knock-on effects on the US economy, including higher prices for consumers caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to estimates, the war could cost the US economy approximately $631 billion or $5,000 per household, when accounting for increased gas and food prices. Harvard economist Linda Bilmes has predicted that the total cost of the war could amount to $1 trillion.

Hegseth stated that the Pentagon is aware of the dynamics surrounding the replenishment of its weapons supply and maintenance of military readiness. He also mentioned that the US has a sufficient stockpile of munitions to continue fighting under any plausible scenario, but acknowledged that future wars pose a risk.

The Trump administration’s plans for the war remain unclear, with Hegseth stating that there are plans to both escalate and de-escalate the conflict. The ongoing pause in fighting is currently on life support, according to President Trump.
