Impeachment Proceedings Against Vice President Sara Duterte Set to Begin
The Philippine House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on Monday on an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte. The complaint seeks her removal from office and perpetual disqualification from holding any government post.
The charges against Vice President Duterte include two constitutional violations and alleged betrayal of public trust for misuse of confidential government funds, failure to disclose her wealth, bribery, and other offenses. One of the allegations involves private bank transactions totaling over $110 million, which were flagged by the anti-money laundering agency.
According to Terry Ridon, a House member and one of the main complainants, the scale of these transactions “cannot be reasonably explained by lawful income, declared assets, or the businesses and professional activities attributed to the couple.” The complaint has already reached the required threshold of votes for approval in the House, with some lawmakers indicating they intend to vote in favor of impeachment.
A previous impeachment motion against Vice President Duterte was passed in 2025 but was later voided by the Supreme Court. This latest impeachment is expected to proceed to the Senate for trial, where a two-thirds majority vote is required to convict and remove her from office.
Vice President Duterte has already declared her intention to run in the 2028 presidential race, while President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has been at odds with her family over various issues, including the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte by the International Criminal Court. The impeachment proceedings have added to the country’s ongoing political turmoil and economic uncertainty due to the global energy crisis.
