Four Lawsuits Filed Over Capitol Riot Compensation Fund
A group of law enforcement officers who defended the US Capitol during the January 6, 2021 riot have filed lawsuits to block payouts from a $1.8 billion compensation fund established by former President Donald Trump.
The lawsuits claim that the fund is intended for individuals who were injured or suffered property damage as a result of the riot, but that it does not cover the costs incurred by law enforcement officers who were present at the scene.
One lawsuit was filed by a group of officers who claim that they are entitled to compensation for their expenses related to responding to and investigating the riot. Another lawsuit was filed by an individual officer who claims that he is owed $100,000 in back pay.
The lawsuits also challenge the eligibility criteria set forth in the fund’s rules, which exclude law enforcement officers from receiving payments unless they can demonstrate that they were directly injured or suffered property damage as a result of the riot.
A separate article reported that some individuals who participated in the January 6 riot and election deniers are celebrating Trump’s compensation fund.
Another article stated that Democrats are trying to use the fund to further divide the Republican Party by twisting the knife in tensions between Trump and his allies.
Additionally, an article reported that Trump’s allies have already begun applying for funding from the $1.8 billion compensation fund.
A fourth article mentioned a GOP representative questioning Blanche on ‘anti-weaponization’ fund.
These lawsuits and articles highlight the ongoing controversy surrounding the compensation fund and its eligibility criteria.
