Russia Accuses Ukraine of Drone Attack on Putin’s Residence, Alleging Fabrication by Kyiv
Moscow has claimed that Ukrainian forces launched a drone attack on President Vladimir Putin’s residence in Novgorod, a region in northwestern Russia. The Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, stated that the alleged attack was intended to disrupt recent diplomatic efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict.
According to Peskov, Russia’s military is aware of when and how it will respond to such incidents. He also stated that the diplomatic consequence would be for Russia to take a more hardline stance in negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine.
However, Ukrainian officials have denied the allegations, calling them “false claims” intended to undermine the peace process. The Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, stated that Moscow had not provided any plausible evidence to support its accusations and that Russia has a long record of making false claims.
Sybiha also noted that Ukraine is disappointed and concerned by statements from other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, India, and Pakistan, which expressed concern over the alleged attack. The Russian Defence Ministry has issued a statement confirming that 91 drones were shot down while heading to Putin’s residence, but no wreckage was found.
The dispute over the attack played out during key discussions on advancing the peace process among European and Canadian leaders. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that transparency and honesty are now required from everyone involved, including Russia. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed hope that peace could be achieved in Ukraine within weeks, citing security guarantees offered by Washington to Kyiv.
The situation remains precarious, with both sides accusing each other of fabricating claims. The push for peace continues, but the dispute over the alleged drone attack has raised concerns about the prospects for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
