Moscow’s Economic Control Over Occupied Donbas Region Grows
The Russian occupation of the Donbas region in southeastern Ukraine has led to significant economic changes, according to officials, residents, and analysts. A recent incident in the Moscow-occupied part of Donetsk has been reported, where a Russian officer allegedly provided a soldier with a phone number of a woman, leading to a short-lived marriage and the distribution of “coffin money” between the couple.
This is not an isolated incident, as the region’s economy has become a lucrative business for some locals. The presence of tens of thousands of Russian soldiers has created opportunities for those who cater to their needs. Undersupplied servicemen spend large amounts on personal gear, and businesses such as restaurants, shops selling alcohol, and underground establishments have seen significant growth.
A black market for goods, including stolen weaponry and drugs, also exists in the region. According to court records, Chechen servicemen are often involved in contraband activities. The market dates back to 2014, when Moscow-backed separatists established two “People’s Republics” in Donetsk and Luhansk.
Moscow’s reasons for maintaining control over the Donbas region include creating a militarized economic base that can be used as leverage against Europe. However, the Russian government has also been accused of jailing and assassinating separatist leaders who have disobeyed them.
The Russian government has invested billions of dollars in construction projects in the Donbas region, including the destruction of entire cities such as Avdiivka and Bakhmut. The rebuilding of steel plants, such as Azovstal and Ilych, has been deemed “unfeasible” by Donetsk’s head, Denis Pushilin.
The occupation of the Donbas region has led to significant economic changes, with some locals benefiting from the situation while others face repression.
