Russia Evacuates Tourists from Cuba Amid Fuel Crisis

Russia to Operate Only Return Flights from Cuba Amid Fuel Shortages

Moscow’s aviation authorities have announced that Russia will operate only return flights from Cuba, citing difficulties with refueling aircraft on the island due to a US-imposed oil blockade. The move is part of an evacuation effort for Russian citizens visiting the Caribbean nation.

According to Rosaviatsia, Russia’s federal aviation regulator, Rossiya Airlines and Nordwind Airlines have adjusted their flight schedules to airports in Russia. These airlines will operate return flights from Havana and Varadero to Moscow, with approximately 5,000 Russian tourists currently on the island, according to the Association of Tour Operators.

The US oil blockade has severely impacted Cuba’s fuel supplies, leading to widespread power outages, cut bus and train services, hotel closures, and restrictions on schools and universities. The situation has become dire since President Donald Trump returned to office, with the US imposing trade tariffs on countries that supply oil to Cuba.

Russia’s Ministry of Economic Development has called on citizens not to travel to Cuba amid the crisis. The Russian embassy in Havana is working with Aeroflot and Cuban aviation authorities to ensure safe repatriation of Russian citizens. Moscow has also announced plans to send humanitarian aid shipments of oil and petroleum products to Cuba.

The US has accused Russia of attempting to “suffocate” Cuba, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow was discussing possible solutions to provide Havana with assistance. The situation highlights the ongoing impact of US sanctions on Cuba’s economy and energy sector.
