Russian Police Raid Publishing House Over Alleged “Homosexual Propaganda”
Moscow police have conducted a raid on Eksmo, the country’s top publishing house, on suspicion of disseminating “homosexual propaganda”. The operation resulted in the seizure of thousands of books and the questioning of several high-ranking officials. According to reports, Yevgeny Kapiev, the chief executive of Eksmo, was taken into custody as part of a “criminal case on extremism” related to the publication of books with LGBT themes.
The raid appears to be linked to Moscow’s recent shift towards hardline social conservatism and repressive laws. Authorities have been cracking down on political life and aggressive foreign policy in recent years. The investigation into Eksmo was initiated last year, following allegations that “LGBT propaganda” had been detected in books published by its Popcorn Books subsidiary.
The Russian government has implemented strict regulations requiring publishers to remove publications and destroy entire editions if they depict same-sex relationships. This law has been tightened recently, with the Supreme Court ruling that LGBTQ activists should be designated as “extremists”. Courts have issued fines and jail sentences to individuals displaying LGBTQ symbols.
In 2023, Russia’s Supreme Court also ruled that the international LGBTQ movement should be banned. The country ranks third from bottom in terms of tolerance of LGBTQ people among European countries, according to the Rainbow Europe organisation.
