Russias Putin suggests possible end to Ukraine conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Sunday that he believes the conflict in Ukraine is nearing its end. The Russian leader expressed his willingness to engage in direct talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, either in Moscow or a neutral location. This comes as Russia and Ukraine observe a three-day ceasefire, which was backed by the United States.
Putin also mentioned that he would only meet with Zelenskyy after the terms of a peace agreement had been settled. The Kremlin previously rejected an offer from US President Donald Trump to hold a trilateral meeting in August 2025.
In his remarks, Putin stated that he is open to negotiating new security arrangements with European countries. He expressed preference for negotiations with Germany’s former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who has faced criticism in Germany for his close relationship with the Russian president.
Putin also addressed Western military support for Ukraine, stating that it had escalated tensions and continued to this day. He claimed that Western countries had waited months for Russia to suffer a crushing defeat but were unable to achieve this goal.
Analysts have noted that Putin’s comments on the war’s end may be driven by global “hope and optimism” rather than a sober assessment of the situation. Keir Giles, an analyst at Chatham House, cautioned against interpreting Putin’s remarks as a reliable indicator of the conflict’s resolution.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant human losses, with tens of thousands killed on both sides. The war has also had a devastating impact on Ukraine and Russia’s economy, with estimated losses of $3 trillion for Russia. Western-led sanctions have further strained Russia’s economy.
In Europe, relations between Moscow and the West are at their worst since the Cold War era.
