Serie A Fixtures Disrupted by Italian Open Tennis Final
Italian football’s top-flight league, Serie A, is facing uncertainty with just three days remaining before the penultimate round of fixtures. The Rome derby, originally scheduled for Sunday at 12:30pm (10:30 GMT), has been rescheduled due to concerns over public safety. The Italian Open men’s singles tennis final, also taking place in Rome, has been moved to Monday evening.
As a result, the Lega Serie A has proposed an alternative schedule, with the derby starting at 12pm (10:00 GMT) and the tennis match pushed back to 5:30pm (15:30 GMT). However, this proposal was rejected by local authorities. The Italian league’s governing body has since lodged a formal appeal with the Regional Administrative Tribunal (TAR).
Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri expressed his team’s disappointment at the situation, stating that they had not anticipated the overlap of matches and the Italian Cup final. Lega Serie A President Ezio Simonelli acknowledged that the proposal to reschedule the derby was made out of a sense of responsibility for the fans involved.
The current standings in Serie A see Napoli leading with 70 points, followed by Juventus on 68, Milan and Roma on 67, and Como on 65. The teams are all competing against sides with little to play for but pride. Lazio is no longer in contention for European spots, while Lecce occupies the last position of safety.
Italy’s national team missed out on qualification for a third consecutive World Cup final after being eliminated by Bosnia and Herzegovina in a playoff on March 31. The defeat has sparked calls for reform within Italian football.
