Somalia Annuls Agreements with UAE Amid Sovereignty Concerns
The Somali government has officially annulled all agreements with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), citing a need to assert its sovereignty and constitutional order. The decision, made by Somalia’s Cabinet on January 12, follows years of cooperation between the two countries.
In recent years, Somalia had pursued engagement with external partners in good faith, expecting mutual respect and positive collaboration. However, the Somali government’s patience was not infinite, and it became clear that international cooperation was bypassing constitutional institutions and fragmenting national authority.
The Somali government has stated that its decision to annul the UAE agreements is an affirmation of boundaries in line with international law. The country’s sovereignty is not an empty slogan but a system that requires political, security, and economic relations with foreign states to flow through recognized national institutions.
Somalia’s recent history shows that tolerating fragmented authority driven by external interests does not lead to stability. Instead, fragile states become stable by consolidating institutions, clarifying chains of command, and ensuring that foreign engagement strengthens the state.
The nullification of UAE agreements concluded with sub-national administrations and the suspension of bilateral security arrangements are part of this effort. Somalia has stated that it will engage in dialogue on transparent, state-to-state terms consistent with constitutional authority and international law.
To mitigate concerns about economic disruption, the Somali government has put in place mechanisms to ensure continuity in port operations and security responsibilities, including the use of neutral international operators to facilitate global trade where necessary.
The decision is seen as a clear line drawn by Somalia’s government, affirming its commitment to upholding national sovereignty and constitutional order.
