A South Korean special prosecutor has accused Kim Keon-hee, wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, of taking bribes and intervening in state affairs. The allegations were made during a year-long investigation into the couple’s involvement in various scandals, including the imposition of martial law.
According to the prosecution team, Kim Keon-hee received over $200,000 in bribes from businesses and politicians in exchange for her influence on personnel appointments and nominations. The total amount of bribes received by Kim is estimated to be 377.25 million won ($263,000).
The investigation also found that Kim Keon-hee allegedly accepted luxury items, including two Chanel bags, a diamond necklace, and a Dior handbag, from Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja, who is currently on trial.
Kim Keon-hee’s lawyers have denied the allegations, stating that investigations do not end with the prosecutor’s findings. They will continue to work to ensure that procedural legitimacy and defense rights are guaranteed.
Former President Yoon Suk-yeol has also been implicated in the scandal, with prosecutors alleging that he was aware of his wife’s dealings. However, Yoon has denied this claim, stating that various individuals visited Kim Keon-hee separately from him and made requests for goods and money.
Yoon is currently on trial for suspected masterminding an insurrection, a charge that could result in a life sentence or even the death penalty. A lower court ruling on his case is expected early in 2026.
The investigation has also found that South Korea’s institutions were “severely undermined” by Kim Keon-hee’s actions, according to the special prosecutor.
