Sudanese Military Captures South Sudanese Fighters in North Kordofan State
The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have captured more than 10 South Sudanese fighters who were allegedly affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group. According to sources within the government-aligned SAF, the capture took place on Thursday in the towns of Kazqil and al-Rayash in North Kordofan State.
The SAF is reportedly preparing to present evidence to the government of South Sudan, which has been involved in a dispute with the RSF since April 2023. The conflict has resulted in significant human suffering, with tens of thousands killed and millions displaced.
In a separate incident, Hamid Ali Abubakar, security adviser to RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, was killed in a drone attack carried out by SAF forces near Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur state. The RSF’s al-Saif al-Battar military unit, which operates primarily in northern, central, and western parts of Darfur, has been involved in clashes with the SAF.
The conflict between the two groups has led to widespread displacement, with thousands of families fleeing renewed fighting in Kordofan and Darfur. The North Darfur Emergency Chambers Council has warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis in the Umbro locality of North Darfur State, where heavy clashes are ongoing amid an RSF offensive.
The RSF controls five states in the Darfur region, while the SAF holds control over most areas of the remaining 13 states. The conflict has had a significant impact on Sudan’s humanitarian situation, with the crisis worsening since the war between the two groups erupted in April 2023.
