Spanish Cyclist Jaume Guardeno Hospitalized After Crash
Jaume Guardeno, 23-year-old Spanish cyclist for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, remains hospitalized in critical condition two weeks after a collision while training. According to the team’s statement on Tuesday, Guardeno has been receiving treatment at Tauli Hospital in Sabadell since March 31.
The incident occurred when Guardeno’s bicycle struck a rock, resulting in head injuries and other serious injuries. The accident happened days after he finished 29th in the Volta a Catalunya cycling race. In the previous year’s Spanish Vuelta, Guardeno secured a 14th-place finish.
As of Tuesday, Guardeno’s condition remains critical but stable within the severity of his injuries. He is currently under constant monitoring and scheduled to undergo additional procedures in the coming days to aid his recovery.
The team has provided updates on Guardeno’s status, stating that he continues to fight for recovery in the intensive care unit. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in professional cycling, which has seen a resurgence in popularity among young riders such as Tadej Pogacar and Mathieu van der Poel.
