Spanish Prime Minister Warns of Potential Destruction in Lebanon

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has made statements regarding the ongoing conflicts in Lebanon and Iran. In an address to the lower house, Sanchez stated that Israel is seeking to inflict significant damage and destruction on Lebanon, similar to its actions in the Gaza Strip.
Sanchez also expressed opposition to the US-Israeli conflict in Iran, describing it as a “far worse” scenario than the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He noted that Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is more hardline and dictatorial than his predecessor.
Spain has been one of the few European nations to condemn Israel’s actions in Gaza, with over 72,000 Palestinians killed since October 7, 2023. The country has also taken action against Israel, including enshrinement in law of a total arms embargo on Israel and withdrawing its ambassador to the country.
Other countries have also condemned Israel’s plans to invade Lebanon and take control of territory up to 30km inside its southern border. Canada warned that Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity must not be violated, while France’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot urged Israel to refrain from its planned occupation of southern Lebanon.
Israel’s military has stated that it is following a model in Lebanon similar to the destruction of cities in Gaza during the conflict. The United Nations has also found that Israel’s war on Gaza amounts to genocide, and top genocide scholars have declared that Israel’s actions meet the legal definition of genocide.
