San Antonio Spurs Advance to NBA Finals with 111-103 Win Over Oklahoma City Thunder
The San Antonio Spurs have secured their first NBA Finals appearance since 2014 by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-103 in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals. The Spurs will face off against the New York Knicks in the championship series, which begins on Wednesday.
Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs with 22 points and seven rebounds, while Julian Champagnie added 20 points, including six three-pointers. Stephon Castle contributed 16 points for the Spurs.
The Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 35 points in the losing effort. Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault praised Gilgeous-Alexander’s performance, stating that he was “brilliant” and had a great game.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson credited his team’s success to their execution and teamwork. “They had to go out and execute, and they did,” he said.
The Spurs’ victory marked a significant milestone for the young French center Wembanyama, who was named series MVP of the Western Conference finals and NBA Defensive Player of the Year. When asked about his award, Wembanyama stated that it meant little to him, as he shared it with his teammates and fans.
Wembanyama also expressed his gratitude towards his teammates, saying they were “incredible” and had stepped up in the game. The 22-year-old Frenchman was emotional at the finish, laughing and crying while hugging his teammates.
The Spurs will now face off against the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, marking a repeat of this season’s NBA Cup final. Oklahoma City coach Daigneault acknowledged that the challenge to repeat would be significant for his team, but praised their effort and progress throughout the series.
