Syrian forces deploy in Hasakah under ceasefire agreement with Kurdish group

Syrian Government Forces Deploy to Hasakah City

A large convoy of trucks entered the northeastern city of Hasakah on Monday, hours after the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) declared a curfew in the area. The SDF had reached a comprehensive agreement with the government earlier this week to integrate with the Syrian army.

According to reports, Syrian government forces were also expected to deploy to the cities of Kobane and Qamishli. The SDF’s security zone in Hasakah is set to be manned by soldiers from the Syrian military, as per the agreement.

The United States has hailed the agreement as a significant development in the country’s efforts towards unity and reconciliation after 14 years of war. The deal includes the formation of a military division that will include three SDF brigades, as well as a brigade for forces in the town of Kobane.

Government officials have confirmed that Interior Ministry forces are deploying to rural areas near Kobane on Monday. The agreement also provides for governing bodies in SDF-held areas to be merged with state institutions.

The Syrian government has been working to consolidate its control over the country, following the fall of former leader Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The deal announced earlier this week marks a significant step towards implementing a US-backed ceasefire deal.
