Taiwan’s Opposition Launches Impeachment Campaign Against President Lai and Premier Cho
A group of lawmakers from the Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) have initiated impeachment proceedings against President William Lai Ching-te and Premier Cho Jung-tai, citing constitutional violations and legislative process irregularities. The move is seen as a significant development in the ongoing political polarization within Taiwan.
The KMT and TPP legislators, along with two independent lawmakers, have gathered enough seats to begin the impeachment process. However, they still fall short of the required two-thirds majority needed to pass an impeachment vote scheduled for May 19.
Experts say that while the impeachment proceedings may not clear further hurdles in the Constitutional Court, they offer a symbolic way for the opposition to express their discontent with Lai’s presidency and Cho’s premiership. Yen-tu Su, an expert in constitutional law and democratic theory at Academia Sinica, notes that the move is “a way to register their protest” and “humiliate the president.”
The impeachment campaign comes as Taiwan’s legislature has been mired in deadlock since Lai took office in 2024. The Democratic Progressive Party, led by Lai, lost its majority in the legislature after last year’s presidential election, leading to a divided government.
Political parties have been engaged in legislative battles over various issues, including the budget and Taiwan’s relationship with China. The KMT has blocked Lai’s proposed $40 billion defense spending bill, while Cho vetoed a bill aimed at easing tax revenue allocation between local and central governments.
Brian Hioe, a commentator on Taiwanese politics, views the impeachment campaign as largely symbolic, intended to draw attention and paint Lai in a negative light. However, Su argues that the move reflects deeper problems within Taiwan’s political system, including partisan polarization and divided government.
The outcome of the impeachment proceedings remains uncertain, but the move is seen as a significant escalation in the ongoing struggle for power in Taiwan’s legislature.
