Thirty-one people injured in nightclub bombing in northern Peru

Peru Sees Rise in Organized Crime, Nightclub Bombing Leaves 33 Injured

A recent explosion at a nightclub in Trujillo, Peru has left 33 people injured, including minors. The incident occurred on Saturday morning and is currently under investigation. Authorities have confirmed that the attack took place in an area with a history of organized crime activity.

According to reports, five of those injured are in serious condition, while three are minors aged 16 and 17. Some victims sustained shrapnel wounds and require amputation procedures or surgery. This incident is not the first of its kind in Trujillo, as a similar explosion occurred less than a month ago.

Trujillo is one of Peru’s most populous cities, located approximately 500 kilometers north of Lima. The region has seen an increase in organized crime activity, with at least 136 explosions reported in Trujillo alone in 2025. In the wider La Libertad region, there have been 286 reported incidents.

Analysts and human rights groups attribute the rise in organized crime to laws passed by the Peruvian Congress, which have weakened government transparency and judicial oversight. The government has also implemented emergency powers to combat crime, sparking concerns about human rights abuses.

In recent years, Peru has seen a surge in homicides related to organized crime, with nearly 2,200 reported last year. This increase coincides with periods of political turmoil and instability. A recent poll found that 68% of Peruvian voters cited insecurity as a top concern, while 67% cited corruption as a major issue.

The incident is being investigated by authorities, who have not yet released any information on the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
