US President Trump Issues Statement Regarding Minnesota Protests
United States President Donald Trump has issued a statement warning of a “day of reckoning and retribution” for the state of Minnesota, where protests have continued since an immigration agent fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis. The statement was posted on Trump’s Truth Social account on Tuesday.
The administration had previously announced plans to send hundreds more Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to Minneapolis, citing concerns over alleged fraud in the Somali-American community. This move has been met with criticism from city and state leaders, who have described it as a “dangerous escalation.”
A federal judge is set to hear arguments on Tuesday in a lawsuit filed by Minnesota’s Attorney General and the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, which alleges that the surge of immigration agents violates residents’ freedom of speech and tramples on the state’s constitutionally protected authorities.
The lawsuit claims that people are being racially profiled, harassed, terrorized, and assaulted, and that schools have gone into lockdown and businesses have been forced to close. The Attorney General has stated that the federal invasion of the Twin Cities must stop.
Protests have continued across Minnesota since the killing of Renee Nicole Good during an enforcement operation in Minneapolis. The Trump administration had previously labeled Good a “domestic terrorist” after the incident, but widely circulated video evidence cast doubt on this claim.
The UN Human Rights Council has called for a “prompt, independent and transparent” investigation into the incident. Prior to Good’s killing, the Trump administration had surged immigration agents to Minnesota as part of an effort to address alleged fraud in the Somali-American community.
