Trump Announces Potential Iran Deal Amid Mistrust Cloud

US President Donald Trump Announces Progress on Iran Peace Deal

A memorandum of understanding has been reached between the US and Iran, according to President Trump. The agreement would reportedly reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil chokepoint that has been closed since February.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, who is mediating the talks, stated that the next round of negotiations will take place “very soon”. Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also reported that “meaningful progress” had been achieved, which could lead to a positive and durable outcome.

However, Iran’s Fars News Agency disputed some of Trump’s claims, stating that the draft agreement would leave Iran in control of the strait. The agency described Trump’s assertions as “inconsistent with reality”.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to hold a security cabinet meeting this evening to discuss the potential deal, according to Israeli media reports.

The details of the agreement remain unclear, but it is reported that a positive outcome could be reached in the near future.
