US President Donald Trump Invites Egyptian and Turkish Leaders to Join Gaza Governance Board
The US has extended invitations to the leaders of Egypt and Turkey to join a proposed “board of peace” aimed at overseeing the post-war transition in Gaza, according to officials in Ankara and Cairo. The board is expected to supervise the temporary governance of the Gaza Strip under the US president’s plan to end Israel’s military operations in the territory.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey received an invitation from Trump on Friday to join the board as a founding member, while Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was also invited to participate. The White House has announced several members of the proposed “founding executive board” for Gaza, which includes US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
The board is part of a proposal unveiled by Trump in October to end Israel’s war on Gaza. The plan involves the establishment of an international oversight body that will supervise Gaza’s governance for a transitional period. The White House has stated that more members will be announced over the coming weeks.
Palestinians in Gaza have expressed concerns about the composition of the board, citing the involvement of individuals with ties to Israel and its military operations. Al Jazeera reported on Saturday that many Palestinians are worried that the board’s priorities may not align with their interests, particularly when it comes to issues such as safety and self-determination.
The White House has declined to provide details on the responsibilities of each board member. A UN Security Council resolution adopted in mid-November authorized the establishment of a stabilization force in Gaza, which will be supported by the proposed “Gaza executive board”. The board is expected to include several international officials and representatives from countries working with the US on the issue.
